The Denver Scholarship Foundation and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs: A partnership to assist DPS students achieve their post-secondary goals
The Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) offers need-based scholarships to qualified Denver Public School (DPS) graduates and we are pleased to offer matching financial support for those exceptional students who receive DSF scholarships and enroll at UCCS.
For 2009-2010, all DSF recipients who attend UCCS will receive a minimum of $2,500 per year ($1,250 per semester) grant aid from UCCS in addition to their DSF scholarships. If a student enrolls less-than-full-time (fewer than 12 credit hours) in a semester, the matching amount for that semester will be pro-rated. A student’s DSF scholarship amount is based on the student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is determined by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
At UCCS, the DSF scholarship amount for 2009-2010 will be $4,150 (EFC of 0 to 4617) or $5,000 (EFC of 4618 to 9234). UCCS will be notified once a student is selected by DSF and we will automatically ensure the student receives the minimum $2,500 matching grant amount. There is no separate application required to receive the UCCS matching award.
For a better understanding of what an eligible student’s financial profile and Cost of Attendance might look like, we’ve provided the examples below based on two different EFC values for an entering student in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
| 2009-2010 Estimated Cost of Attendance* | ||||
| Tuition/Fees | Est. Books and Supplies | On Campus Housing | Other** | Total |
| $6,470 | $1,728 | $ 8,498 | $ 5,096 | $ 21,792 |
*Current year cost of attendance figures for the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
**Transportation, medical, and personal cost estimates can vary depending upon individual circumstances and spending habits.
For example, Family A files the FAFSA and receives a maximum Pell Grant award from the federal government (i.e. whose EFC equals zero). Family A has a household size of 3 with 1 child in college, and an adjusted gross income of $18,000. In comparison, Family B files the FAFSA and its result is an EFC of 9234. Family B has a household size of 4 with 2 children in college, and an adjusted gross income of $87,500.
At UCCS, these students’ grant aid awards will consist of:
| Family A (0 EFC) | Family B (9234 EFC) | |
| DSF Scholarship | $ 4,150 | $5,000 |
| Matching UCCS-DSF Scholarship/Institutional Aid* | $ 2,500 | $ 3,000 |
| Federal Pell Grant | $ 5,350 | $ 0 |
| Colorado State Grant | $ 850 | $ 0 |
| Minimum Total GRANT Aid | $ 12,850 | $8,000 |
*DSF scholars will be guaranteed institutional matching of a minimum $2,500 per academic year. In cases where other institutional aid is awarded (for example the UCCS Tuition Grant) scholars will receive only the guaranteed matching amount.
In both of the examples above, a student will also be considered for other types of financial aid including work-study and loans, as well as other need-based or merit scholarships.
Students must apply to DSF for renewal each year, and if approved, will be eligible for renewal of the UCCS matching award.
